Back to Routine

Sometimes, it's the smallest gestures that bring back the most wonderful memories.
At Friends Helping at Home, we believe that care is about so much more than practical support. It's about getting to know the person behind the care, understanding their story and finding little ways to bring happiness into their everyday life.
Katie Steed, one of our wonderful independent Service Providers, recently shared a particularly special moment with a client who has lived an extraordinary life in the world of entertainment.
Through a thoughtful gesture, a little sparkle and a shared love of music, Katie helped create a beautiful moment filled with treasured memories.
It all started with an unexpected find in a charity shop.
Katie spotted a beautiful green sequinned top and immediately thought of her client. Not only was green her favourite colour, but the sparkle was a perfect reflection of her glamorous past as a professional entertainer.
Her remarkable career began at just 15 years old, singing and performing cabaret in clubs for servicemen. Over the years, she entertained audiences across the world with her incredible range of talents, including singing, tap dancing, comedy, impersonations and even playing the spoons!
Throughout her career, she worked alongside some familiar names, including Hattie Jacques, sang with Petula Clark and appeared on television with Eric Sykes and Michael Barrymore.
Together with her closest friend and fellow entertainer, she travelled, performed and created a lifetime of wonderful memories.
During a visit, Katie noticed an old hat sitting on the hat stand, one that her client had worn during her performing days.
Knowing its significance, she picked it up and handed it to her.
With a huge grin, her client immediately put it on!
Katie then found an old photograph of her client wearing that very same hat many years ago and decided to recreate the moment with a new photograph.
The result was a beautiful reminder of a life filled with music, laughter and adventure.
It wasn't a planned activity or a special occasion. Just a thoughtful moment made possible by someone taking the time to truly get to know the person they support.
98 Years of Wonderful Stories
Having recently celebrated her 98th birthday, this remarkable lady still has so many stories to share.
Her lifelong friend, who is 12 years younger, visits a couple of times a week. Together, they sing, laugh and reminisce about their adventures, including travelling down the Mississippi River, entertaining people with their singing and playing the spoons.
On one particularly memorable occasion, Katie stayed for an extra hour while her client's friend was visiting, simply to listen to their songs and stories.
Reflecting on that afternoon, Katie shared:
“It brought tears to my eyes to think of all the happiness they have given to so many people. They have so many wonderful stories to tell!”
These moments are a wonderful reminder that every person has a unique history, filled with experiences, achievements and memories worth celebrating.

Although Katie's client now lives with dementia, music, familiar faces and shared memories continue to bring moments of joy.
Visits from friends often spark happy memories, filling the room with laughter and smiles.
For Katie, supporting people living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease is something particularly close to her heart. It's also what inspired a phrase she feels passionately about:
“Never Forget – Ones That Forget.”
Katie explains:
“Even when a family member or friend forgets you, your love and company will still mean so much to them. Their memories may become harder to access because of the disease, but the comfort of love, kindness and companionship can remain.”
It's a beautiful reminder that even when someone struggles to recognise a familiar face or recall a treasured memory, the emotional connection they share with loved ones can still bring reassurance, happiness and comfort.
With the love and support of her family, alongside dedicated independent Service Providers like Katie, her client can continue living in the comfort and familiarity of her own home.
It's these meaningful connections that make personalised care so important.
With 20 years of experience in care, Katie understands just how valuable it is to build genuine relationships with the people she supports.
“One of my greatest pleasures is getting to know my clients and hearing about their lives. I also really enjoy supporting people living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease, helping them feel valued, sharing happy memories and making them feel special.”
Whether it's reminiscing over old photographs, enjoying music together or taking the time to do someone's nails and makeup, Katie believes it's often the little things that make the biggest difference.
She also specialises in respite care and overnight support, helping families take a well-deserved break, knowing their loved ones are receiving thoughtful, compassionate care.
Speaking about her experience with Friends Helping at Home, Katie added:
“I love being part of Friends Helping at Home. There is such a genuine interest in helping people stay in their own homes, the ladies in the office are wonderful, and the network attracts some amazing carers too!”

At Friends Helping at Home, we believe everyone deserves care that recognises them as an individual, celebrates their life experiences and respects their choices.
Our network of independent Service Providers, including people like Katie, offers more than practical assistance. They bring companionship, kindness and a genuine interest in the people they support.
